Need new host

From: Sash | Posted: 9/30/2004 4:20:16 AM User Level: Administrator
Okay, the cron jobs have been disabled. This means no midnight updates, no hourly updates, no telling who is logged in, etc. My host refuses to let them back under any conditions, so it is time to get a new, more expensive, host. What I am asking for is donationa so that I can get enough money to move and keep Solar Conflict running. Please donate if you like this game and want to keep it up.

Hah, after all the times you ignored us, I doubt any of us would donate. On the other hand, SOMEONE might...

Dragon that is not nice... So0o0o Sasha... how much money do you need? I am wondering because I might donate if you agree to some conditions... like changing some stuff and such like that... it might take a little programming but I have 1.5k sitting in my bank account right now... it is mine and was a present from my godmother for my graduation. It has been burning a hole in my pocket.

Yeah, you're right, it wasn't nice. To make up for it, I'll offer Sasha a deal. If he can offer me something that I think is enough, I can tell him how to get the cron jobs back AND stay on the same server-- all legal; no hacking necessary. ::)

Dragon, if you mean setting up a "fake cron" then I don't plan on doing that. It makes the pages load more slowly and it isn't reliable. (What if no one loads a page betweem 3:00 AM and 3:30 AM, or what is the update must happen at exactly 3:00 AM.)

I'm not sure what you mean by a fake cron, but if you tell me, I can tell you whether it's the same thing or not.

Oh, and please call me Sasha. Since you're the only Sasha here, I'll know you're not referring to yourself when you're talking to me. Please notice that this message is NOT a threat.

Sascha,

Why are you using Cron jobs? They're cluncky and really only good for critical service monitoring.

You do know that PHP can be compiled as a server side scripting language right? Write a php script that doesn't terminate and loops indefinitely checking the time. When it's time for an update the DO the update, then go back to idle.

You only check what, every 15 minutes or so?? So in the main while (true) {} loop just make is sleep for a minute or two when it's not needed. That way you'll take almost no CPU power AT ALL while it's not doing anything and you're not calling a CRON job all the time...

If your host has an issue with that they're bastards.

Cheers,

Ben.

From my experience, hosts don't like processes running in the background, whether they use CPU power or not... (Cron jobs are the only exception generally.)

Anyway, I got a new host anyway. (The cron job isn't the only reason we had to switch; we've had more than a little downtime.) I had to pay mainly with my money, because I got very few donations in the past, but oh well. What is important is that soon we will be on the new server.

Why would everything be reset?

I dunnu I just had a thought in my mind that you would do that and change stuff around when we switched. I know you can just copy everything and put it on the new server but I thought you may have wanted to do that.
